Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Absolute bliss. Pure, moisturizing Savon de Marseille soaps with the regional flowers of lavender, orange, rose and verbena. In the Middle Ages, big blocks of gentle soap were first crafted in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille with olive oil from local groves, marine ash and sea salted water. The quality of these soaps were immediately famous throughout Europe and in 1688 French law declared that only soaps made according to certain ancient methods could bear the important mark Savon de Marseille. Now the most prized of all soaps in the world, our Savon de Marseille is still crafted by hand, in Marseille, just as it has been for hundreds of years. It takes the Maitre de Savon (soapmaster) two weeks to make Marseille Soap. The purest ingredients (mentioned above) are heated for ten days in antique cauldrons. Know-how passed down through the generations will reveal to the soapmaster the right moment to pour the mixture into open pits where it slowly hardens. Cut into cubes and stamped, without machines of any kind, the soaps are then set out to dry in the sun and cool winds. Savon de Marseille (also known as "Marseille Soap") is once again being rediscovered for its extraordinary purity, gentle skin care and ecological value. Savon de Marseille is recommended by dermatologists throughout the world for dry or sensitive skin, eczema and other ailments. In France it has been trusted for generations to cleanse everything from linens to little faces. Marseille Soap is totally biodegradable, requires little packaging and its manufacture is environmentally friendly. Authentic Marseille Soap is stamped with its weight in grams - allowing households to compare prices and plan their inventories. No soap is "greener." In France they are sold piled high on open-air market tables like produce, wrapped in craft paper. Your Savon de Marseille will be delivered without plastic packaging, carefully wrapped in paper stamped with the famous marks to prove its authenticity.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic product!   January 5, 2009
I first bought a lavender cube of Savon de Marseille while on vacation in Paris and was delighted to find it here in the U.S. It's a wonderful soap that leaves your skin perfectly clean and smooth. I recently bought some for my Mom and she said it is the first time in many years that her skin doesn't feel dry after using the soap. If you're looking for additional scents and sizes I found them on [...]. Truly terrific product!

The soap smells heavenly! The cube shape of the soap is not something that we see often in the USA. It looks like the soap would be difficult to hold onto when bathing because it is quite chunky. For the aroma alone, I would purchase the product to place in my lingerie drawer. However, I purchased the soaps with a view to giving them out as stocking stuffers. The company (not Amazon) sent out the products promptly and they arrived in excellent condition despite the fact that they were packed higgledy piggledy in the carton. The only disappointment was that the soap arrived crudely wrapped in rough, brown paper that did not do the soap any justice but did not affect the quality of the soap itself. I would do business with this company again especially when they offer free shipping.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect soap.   December 4, 2008
You don't need body wash or anything anymore, just get a block of this (one of these will last you months) and all the exfoliating and cleaning you need done is a piece of cake. It has crushed pieces of the flower in the soap, which has a "scrubbing" effect, and which does a good job at exfoliating the skin. It also lathers very quickly and easily. I got Lavender, and it's lovely, and I got a Verbena for my mother, and she also fell in love with it.

I wish they'd make it in a better size though as it's quite big, and having a more typical soapbar shape might be more convenient for some. The big size works fine for me in the end though.

I keep a big bowl of all different colors of Doux soap in my guest bathroom. When I have a house guest they get to take one home. The only bad thing about Doux soap is that a bar lasts so long. I'm always anxious to try the next color yet even when there is only a sliver left, I can't toss it because it still smells so good. I am spoiled but can't use anything else. I used to send flowers for anniversaries, funerals, birthdays. Now I send a big glass bowl of Doux soap. It's the gift that keeps on giving and doesn't wilt. Try it, your friends will love you for it and THEY will be addicted too!

5 out of 5 stars Savon de Marseille lavender soap with crushed local flowers   September 6, 2008
This soap I purchased for a friend as well, and when I got it in the mail I couldn't believe how incredible it smelled. I purchased it after reading the excellent customer reviews it was given. I give this soap the highest rating possible as well. You will not be disappointed in this soap. It provides a very pleasant scent for your bathroom that lasts.
